The imperative for all students to succeed and be prepared for success in lifelong learning, a rewarding career, and meaningful participation in civic life has launched a new era in public education. There is growing consensus among communities, educators, business leaders, and researchers that preparing students to succeed and thrive after high school requires teaching not just content knowledge, but also transferable skills and dispositions that enable people to take responsibility for their own lives and operate within a greater social context. The current system is not designed to deliver on that promise. The Center for Innovation in Education (CIE) supports states and local partners taking on the task of shifting a hugely complex system from an orientation on schooling to an orientation on learning. We support the movement towards personalized, competency-based systems designed for deeper learning. We approach our work through essential questions and support innovators who are testing solutions in a number of ways.
