Inspired by the work of Good Shepherd Microfinance in Australia, Dr Dale began setting up the Ngā Tangata Microfinance Trust (NTM) in 2009 with the NZ Council of Christian Social Services and NZ Federation of Family Budgeting Services. Once Kiwibank came on board in 2010, partnerships with other community organisations soon followed and NTM began to offer no interest and no fee small loans in South Auckland in early 2011. These No Interest Loans (NILS) are up to $1,500.

Since late 2012, debt relief loans (DRLS) of up to $3,000 have also been offered. Kiwibank and Nga Tangata Microfinance Trust won the 2013 NZI Greatest Contribution to a Sustainable NZ Award (supreme award) as well as the Community Innovation category at the 2013 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards.

\n\nNicola Brehaut is proud to have been involved with Nga Tangata Microfinance since its inception. Currently the Northern Operations Manager, Community Operations for the Department of Internal Affairs, Nicola has a proven track record of innovative service provision in both the Private and Non-Profit sectors. She works in collaboration with others, building productive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and has a commitment to enabling change for the benefit of Aotearoa New Zealand.

\n\nJulie was a founding member of Child Poverty Action Group and worked for the organisation in administration and communications. Julie is passionate about social justice and inequality and a few years ago she did a Master in Equality Studies at UCD in Dublin.

\n\nDr M. Claire Dale is Research Fellow with the Retirement Policy and Research Centre at the University of Auckland. She is chief editor and contributing author of CPAG's publications Our children, our choice: priorities for policy, 2014, and Left Further Behind: How policies fail the poorest children in New Zealand, 2011, and co-author of CPAG's first publication Our Children: Priority for Policy, 2001. Claire writes many of CPAG’s submissions on tax, health, welfare and financial sector reform. In 2010 she founded Nga Tangata Microfinance Trust in partnership with Kiwibank.

He has deep and committed ties to the local community assisting people create more interdependence in their lives. He sees Social Enterprise as an effective way to achieve multiple outcomes; to bring together the Enterprise learned in the Private Enterprise sector, and the Social impact sought by the Public sector, and historically located within the Charity and Not For Profit sector.

\n\nRonnie Matafeo, chair of the Pacifica Mammas Arts and Cultural Trust was the first registered Pacific Island quantity surveyor. He is an appointee to the Small Business Advisory Group. He is a leading member of the Auckland Methodist Central Parish.

\n\nGeorgina is Ngati Hako Hauraki and after 27 years in a Tertiary environment her role now is as Manager of the Manurewa based Whanau o Tumanako, a Charitable Trust. Many people in this area are under extreme financial duress so financial literacy is an important tool for improving the lives of these clients. The opportunities available through NTMF to help families create financial independence in small manageable steps is a huge achievement for themselves and the community.

\n\nCraig has a background as a Chartered Accountant and senior operations executive with exposure to a range of financial services markets in New Zealand and internationally. Craig has over 18 years’ experience in financial services, including roles as a Chief Financial Officer, and Managing Director for a diversified financial services organisation. Craig holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration from Victoria University of Wellington, and is a Chartered Accountant.
