The Alfred Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine is one of Australasia's leading academic departments.
Our registrars have a history of being some of the best Australasian anaesthetic trainees with a consistent performance at the highest level in the Primary and Final Fellowships examinations. We have multiple prize winners and merit award candidates in the Renton Prize, Cecil Gray Prize and Gilbert Brown Prize categories.
And we consistently attract fellows to work in our department who have gained these achievements, as well as prestigious awards such as the ANZCA medal and Robert Orton Medal.
Our Senior staff (Consultants) is composed of Staff Specialists and Visiting Specialists, many of whom are leaders in their fields having been chosen to be on many of ANZCA Committees and present at National and International Conferences. Specifically they have been Part 1 & 2 Fellowship Tutors and Examiners, influenced the develop of the Anaesthetic Curriculum, been Chairs or Members of the Executive Committees including ANZCA Special Interest Groups (SIG) such as the Airway Management SIG, Cardiovascular SIG, History of Anaesthesia SIG, Neurosurgery SIG, Obstetric SIG and Trauma SIG.
We provide a unique specialised service to the patients and specialist units of the hospital by providing 24-hour in-house Staff Specialist (Consultant) level cover.
The Department provides a 24-hour service to patients of the State Trauma Service, the State Burns Service and Cardiothoracic Transplantation Service, in addition to the 24 hour cover to the anaesthetic, pain management and surgical needs of the Alfred, Caulfield and Sandringham Hospitals.
The Department operates the Acute Pain Service who oversees the management of regional analgesia infusions and patient-controlled-analgesia. This consultant-based service is available by referral to all other specialist units within the hospital for advice or management of patients with pain that is difficult to control.
Members of the Department attend all Arrest Team calls and MET team calls within the Hospital. Requests for assistance with resuscitation of Surgical and Medical patients are accommodated when specific expertise is unavailable from within the managing unit.
The Perioperative Service provides a Staff Specialist (Consultant) or Senior Registrar from the Anaesthetic Department available to manage the workup of surgical patients prior to their operation and facilitate the enhance recovery of patients postoperatively. This supports a day of surgery admission rate of greater than 90% within the hospital. Many of these patients are complex vascular and cardiac cases.
