Cattle handling presents many challenges especially when the animal you are trying to handle is two or three times bigger than you. So why not start off small and learn your skills on a Dexter.
\n\nDexter Cattle are a traditional breed that originated in Ireland and have been saved from extinction by dedicated breeders from around the world. They offer all of the attributes of other cattle but they are approximately half the size.
\n\nThat means less washing, less brushing, less combing and less problems? Well not really because a Dexter is just like any other cow they are just that little bit smaller and cuter.

CATTLE HANDLING SATURDAY 17th - 8am to 4pm
\n\nThe cattle camp on 17 and 18 October is open to all ages and will provide an opportunity for participants to learn more about the beef industry and the Dexter Breed, in particular.
\n\nParticipants will be given expert training in handling, preparing and judging skills. Camp participants will be grouped into teams and allocated several Dexter Cows or Heifers to prepare for showing in front of an internationally renowned Judge.
\n\nParticipants will compete for team and individual trophies and prizes worth more than $400.
\n\n\n\n
The program will start on Saturday morning with teams being allocated several animals and given the task of grooming and prepare for the Grand Parade to coincide with the official opening of the Expo by the Mayor of Macksville later in the day.
\n\nWorkshops on the finer points of cattle handling and judging will be run throughout the day by experienced Dexter Breeders and Judges.

CATTLE JUDGING - SUNDAY - 8am to 12noon
\n\nStudents will be able to represent their team or School as they test their knowledge in a Judging competition where they will be asked to rank four animals and provide a commentary on the reasons for their choice.
\n\nA special Dexter cattle parading and judging session will be held on Sunday morning prior to the Big Dexter Cattle Auction.
\n\n\n\n
This event is being held in conjunction with a Special Expo being organised by the North Coast Dexter Cattle Promotion Group with assistance from the Manning Valley Dexter Cattle Promotion Group.
\n\nThe venue for the event will be the Macksville Showground with all animals being penned in the Cattle Yards at the Showground.
\n\n\n\n
Cost for the one day session will be $30, which includes lunch on Saturday, $20 if you are 18 years or under or you are representing a registered DCAI Dexter Stud.
\n\nAll participants will receive a special Expo gift pack and there will be both team and individual prizes.
