\n\nHome Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters

HIPPY is a two year home-based program that empowers parents/carers to be their children’s first teacher. It promotes school readiness and maximizes the chances of a successful early school experience.
\n\n\n\n
HIPPY fosters parent/carer involvement in school and community life and best of all.
\n\n\n\n

\n\tIn Israel in the late 1960’s children of immigrants were not achieving in school as well as their peers. Professor Lombard and her team investigated the notion of finding a way to bring changes into the home that would help prepare children to deal with demands of school.

The 2 focus areas were:
\n\nThe educational enrichment of the child
\n\tStrengthening the mothers self esteem through her activities as an educator in the home setting.
\n\t\n\n
From this philosophy the HIPPY program was developed.
\n\n\n\n
The HIPPY program is free. It is a two year program.
\n\n
\n\nIn the first year there are 30 activity packs and in the second year there are 15 activity packs that parents work through with their child with support from their mentor.
\n\n\n\n
The families also receive a starter pack which has the supplies needed to do the activities.
\n\n\n\n
These activity packs are delivered to the families and the home mentor goes through each pack with the parent/carer and demonstrates the activities. There are also storybooks that come with some of the packs and the children really enjoy these books.
\n\n\n\n
During home visits the mentor is also there to support the family with any information which to assist the family.
\n\n
\n\nVarious group and festive activities are also enjoyed through the year.

\n\nHIPPY is an international program that was developed by Professor Avima D. Lombard and her colleagues in the school of education at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. It began as a pilot project in 1969 with 100 families from a refugee community setting in Israel.
\n\n\n\n
The positive outcomes of this pilot program led to the Ministry of Education in Israel adopting HIPPY as a national program in the mid 1970’s.
