Lake Placid is a pristine body of fresh water formed at the bottom of the Barron Gorge. As part of the gorge it is lined with huge rock formations and beautiful rainforest, harbouring tree snakes, abundant birdlife and other flora and fauna.

Once a local hotspot for swimming, people are now reluctant to use Lake Placid since a 1.5 metre crocodile sighting in 2012 (EHP log).

However, this fresh water paradise is still used by kayakers, SUP'ers and rafters and is a breath taking, peaceful spot to paddle.

With the council spending 20 million dollars on revamping this area, the facilities are being upgraded to include a boardwalk and viewing platform (2017). Currently there are toilets and a restaurant.
