This is an excerpt from the ABC Local Radio (936) Drive Program on 27 November 2018 where Gary Magnussen interviews the KDWA President, Georgia Clark, regarding the new Kingborough Council Dog Management Policy, and particularly the new off-lead dog exercise area at Taroona Beach.

\n\nA group of responsible dog owners and walkers who enjoy exercising our dogs both on and off lead in as many places as possible. We are keen to maintain the health and safety of our pets, ourselves, the community, native animals and birds.
\n\n
\n\nWe started with very few members (under 10) in 1998 as a result of The Parks and Wildlife Service taking over the management of what is now the Peter Murrell Reserve. This had previously been land reserved for public housing. Parks informed the Kingborough community that dogs would not be allowed in the new Reserve and several local residents asked for a meeting with them. At the end of that meeting Parks advised they could not talk to us again unless we started an Incorporated Body. We did so and after many meetings with Parks we reached a compromise which still applies. For many years we were on a Management Committee for the Reserve until these meetings were discontinued. Our membership has now grown to well over100 people in the Kingborough municipality.

\n\nWe are proud to be the first dog walking association in Tasmania and have since welcomed the formation of Hobart, Huon Valley and Sorell DWA’s.
\n\n
\n\n\n\n
Over the last 20 years KDWA has achieved much, including access to fantastic off-lead and dog walking opportunities.
\n\nTaroona Beach (east) off-lead area (2018)
\n\tPre-Xmas fencing of Kingston View Drive off-lead dog park (thanks to Kingborough Council) (2018)
\n\tThe Peter Murrell Reserve – some off lead areas, some on lead areas
\n\tSuncoast Dog Park and Dru Point off lead area – off lead areas mainly fenced
\n\tWe managed to get the 1999 Dog Control Act halted and helped produce a new Act
\n\tWe took part in the committee to formulate Dru Point as it is now
\n\tWe have been responsible for getting the extension of access to the southern side of Browns River at Kingston Beach
\n\tSuncoast Dog Park. Work on this area is ongoing as funds become available
\n\tWe have campaigned successfully for relaxation of Federal regulations re : dogs at outdoor eating establishments
\n\tWe have encouraged other Clubs and helped start both Hobart and Huon Dog Walking Associations
\n\tWe have run 2 Vets in the Park days, plus day and part day seminars for all the community.

\n\n
Maintaining an open dialogue with Kingborough Council and other regulatory bodies regarding dog management. Current issues include:
\n\nDevelopment of a Dog Management Handbook with Kingborough Council
\n\tOngoing discussions about the management of Tyndall Beach
\n\tThe Taroona end of the Alum Cliffs Track
\n\tImprovements at Suncoast Dog Park - trying to obtain funding for these improvements plus planning permission where needed
\n\tSelling advertising space at Suncoast Dog Park to help fund these improvements
\n\tEncouraging the community to do the right thing with their dogs, particularly picking up after them and ensuring they are well-behaved.
