Dyslexia & Learning Assessments

We offer cognitive and learning Assessments for children aged 6 to 18years.

\n\n

 

\n\n

These assessments are able to answer commonly asked questions including:

Cognitive Assessments are able to provide specific information about a child’s profile of intellectual strengths and weaknesses, in addition to identifying other difficulties such as attention, concentration and motivation. Understanding your child’s profile in this way is important, as it enables strategies at home and school to be tailored to suit your child’s needs.

\n\n

 

\n\n

For Cognitive assessments we use a measure called the WISC-IV (Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children, 4th edition), which is a commonly used assessment measure, recognized as one of the best available for conducting assessments with children aged 6 to 18years.

\n\n

 

\n\n

Learning Assessments involve conducting an initial Cognitive Assessment (as described above) to identify a child’s cognitive ability/potential, followed by conducting a test of achievement. The test of achievement investigates whether or not a child is able to complete tasks to the level we would expect, given their cognitive potential.

\n\n

 

\n\n

Tests of Achievement assess the child in the main areas of school-based learning including Reading, Mathematics, Written and Oral Expression. If a child’s achievement score is below that predicted based on their Cognitive ability score – this is indicative of a potential learning disorder in that area.

\n\n

 

\n\n

For a learning assessment, the WISC-IV is completed in addition to the WIAT-II (Weschler Individual Achievement Test, 2nd edition).  Both assessment usually take 90-120mins to complete, depending on the child’s age and ability.

\n\n

Reports and Feedback

\n\n

 

\n\n

Following the assessment, we provide a comprehensive report explaining, in detail, all tests used and all results, with a comprehensive summary and list of recommendations for home and school.

\n\n

 

\n\n

A 1-hour feedback session is then held with parents to explain the results, go through the report and answer any additional questions that either parent may have. This session can also be used for planning of any further assessment or intervention that a parent may which to engage their child in.
