Cultural safety training aims to improve the quality of service delivered by health care providers to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the experience of service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Ultimately cultural safety training should lead to better health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The material in these modules is designed as a support for immediate and future action.
There are a wide variety of terms and definitions used in the cultural training arena. We have chosen to predominantly use the term cultural safety. We use Williams’ definition of cultural safety as “an environment that is safe for people: where there is no assault, challenge or denial of their identity, of who they are and what they need. It is about shared respect, shared meaning, shared knowledge and experience, of learning, living and working together with dignity and truly listening”.
\nIn practice we emphasise that the presence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, with the ability to control or influence the processes operating in health services, is one of the major ways to create a safe environment.

Leadership in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health designed to help health professionals gain the skills and motivation to get involved in partnerships for better
\nprimary health care of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
CST adopts a head → heart → hands → approach to Cultural Safety, reflecting the need to elicit thoughts, feelings and promote positive action in people.

\nCST participants are given information to process and intellectualise throughout the training and the opportunity to engage personally with Aboriginal people during the storytelling session and training. We believe interaction gives a human context to the statistics and facts they hear and see about Aboriginal people and encourages positive engagement with Aboriginal people in a culturally safe way.
\nWorking better in Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) is currently approved as an Active Learning Module (ALM) in the RACGP QI & CDP 2014-16 program after completing Modules 1 and 2 of the Cultural Safety Traing. This is approved for 40 Category 1 points - Activity #2673.
\nThis program will be re-assessed in December 2019.
