If you have children, a sand pit will definitely be a popular addition to your back yard. Ideal for digging, building and creating shapes. It’s a great way to get them to play outside on warm summer days.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Border Material (Timber, Rock, Brick etc.)
\n\tTrencher Digger (optional)
\n\tDrainage Gravel / Aggregate
\n\tShade Cloth
\n\tSand (we suggest Harbour Sand)

STEP 1: CHOOSING YOUR LOCATION
When choosing the location of your sandpit look for an area that receives moderate sunlight, taking into consideration where trees are located. Don’t build near fruit trees or palm trees or you will have another job of cleaning out the pit of rotten fruit and seeds.
STEP 2: CHOOSING YOUR BORDER
When deciding on a border of the sandpit, don’t be afraid to get creative and look for something different to the traditional timber. Maybe try stone, brick or even tree stumps placed closed together.
STEP 3: DECIDE ON YOUR SHAPE
Now that your location and border is sorted it is time to mark the outline of the sandpit. Decide on a shape that best suits your yard and then dig out the trench for the border. The trench for the border should be approximately 6 inches deep. Then, with the outline clearly marked, dig out the centre of the box. NOTE: To make the process a little easier, maybe consider hiring a trencher digger.
STEP 4: ASSEMBLING YOUR SANDPIT
Next, lay down, in place, your timber or border materials. Remembering if you have chosen to use stone or bricks that you make sure you have pushed them firmly together to form a tight outline.
Then on the bottom lay some gravel or aggregate to aid with drainage. Now you can line the sandpit with shade cloth (not plastic), this will keep grass, weeds and creepy crawlies from coming up through the bottom of the sand pit.
STEP 5: FILLING THE SANDPIT
Determine how much sand you need to fill your sandpit. For rectangle or square sandpits an approximate way to work out how many cubic metres is needed, is to multiply the Length by Width by Depth to get the total.
For best results we suggest using HARBOUR SAND (also known as DUNE SAND), as it is less likely to stick to your child and when it is wet, it makes the best sand castles.
