In Lautrec’s footsteps

An aristocrat known for his louche lifestyle, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec created art that was inseparable from his legendary life.
\n\nHis career lasted just over a decade and coincided with a major development in late nineteenth-century Paris: the birth of modern printmaking. Lautrec’s posters promoted Montmartre and it’s entertainers and elevated the popular medium of the advertising lithograph to the realm of high art.

\n\nI have been lucky to see the collection of Lautrec’s mother Countess Adèle Zoë Marie Marquette Tapié de Céleyran housed in the Lautrec Museum in Albi, France several times over the past 20 years.
\nGradually the collection of Lautrec’s work has been greatly expanded to include a large selection of lithographic stones and examples of most of his prints.
\nOn seeing these prints close up for the first time I was struck by his use of a fine mist to create colours and tone, his strong solids and loose painterly lines. Annie
\n\nIn these 2 new workshops at Warringah Printmakers Summer School we take a close look at Lautrec’s prints. Hopefully we can emulate some of his techniques as they apply to our own works using Waterless Lithography
