We are proud to present one of Darwin’s largest selections of beautiful woven Pandanus baskets by artists including Margaret Bidingal and Shirley Wilfred from Numbulwar – an Aboriginal community on the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory.

The women harvest the Pandanus, and then strip the strands into thin little strands that are then dyed, and used for weaving. All the dyes are natural, and the women use a combination of bark, plant roots, leaves, flowers, berries, and grasses. The colours are also achieved not only by the combination of the natural elements, but also the length of time that the individual strands of Pandanus are left in the dying mixture. The colours also change according the seasons. For example, the Wet Season the reds can be much darker.
