HQPlantations has now closed the pine plantation compartments between Mawsons Road and the Beerwah Cemetery.
\n\n\n\n
The area will be closed to public access for approximately two years to enable the safe completion of harvesting, site preparation and replanting.
\n\n\n\n
Fencing has been erected, video surveillance has been installed and regular security patrols are being performed to ensure the work site remains safe during the closure.
\n\n

Harvesting in Good Night Scrub State Forest

HQPlantations is harvesting its Araucaria (hoop pine) plantations located in the Good Night Scrub State Forest south of Gin Gin. The harvest is taking place over an 18 month period.
\n\n\n\n
Harvest operations are being undertaken according to management guidelines outlined by the Queensland Government and by the HQPlantations sustainable forest management systems which are independently audited under the internationally recognised Responsible Wood and Forest Stewardship Council Certification systems.
\n\n\n\n
HQPlantations, in conjunction with the Bundaberg Regional Council, has put in place a traffic management plan, including curfews and speed restrictions, to ensure safe road use by log transport trucks and the effective management of local roads during harvest and haul operations.
\n\n\n\n
Access to plantation areas within the Good Night Scrub State Forest may be restricted from time to time for safety reasons.
\n\n\n\n
Once the Good Night Scrub plantations have been harvested, management of the area will revert to the State Government in accordance with the requirements of HQPlantations’ Plantation Licence.
\n\n
\n\nThe Good Night Scrub National Park will be unaffected by the harvest.

Private plantation closure – Mawhinney Logging Area

From 1 February 2018, HQPlantations will permanently close its private property at Mawhinney Logging Area to the public to address unlawful and inappropriate access and associated damage to the road network and plantation forest.

Mawhinney Logging Area (LA) is freehold land and is not within the adjacent Peachester State Forest or managed under the Plantation Licence from the Queensland Government.

Without restricting access, repaired roads are unlikely to remain in good condition.

Operational access to the area for fire fighting is critical to ensure proper protection of HQPlantations plantation timber resource, used for local housing construction, and to prevent any fires that might start in Mawhinney LA from spreading to private property or national park.
\n\n\n\n
Rows of pine trees have been destroyed to make numerous illegal recreation tracks which devalues the timber resource and raises potential environmental issues due to erosion and sediment runoff.
\n\n\n\n
Mawhinney LA will be closed to all public access including walking, cycling or horse riding and all motor vehicles (including motor bikes and 4WD) unless the prior written permission of HQPlantations has been obtained.
\n\n\n\n
The rest of the Plantation Licence Area (PLA) will continue to be open to the public for lawful recreation unless otherwise indicated for forest operations.
\n\n
\n\nThe PLA encompasses those parts of the Beerburrum plantations that are on State Forest tenure licenced to HQPlantations by the Queensland Government for plantation management. More information including frequently asked questions click here.

The Plantation Licence does not cover HQPlantations private freehold lands.

Recovery harvesting and plantation establishment operations in the Byfield area is proceeding well and will continue indefinitely. The Byfield plantation in the Capricorn Coast area remains closed to the public while these recovery operations are in progress.

Log haulage from Kalpowar plantations

\n\nStrong export demand for Queensland’s plantation timbers continues to deliver economic benefits to the Boyne Valley, with HQPlantations recommencing log haulage operations northwards from its native Araucaria plantations at Kalpowar via the Gladstone to Monto Road this week.
\n\n\n\n
The Many Peaks section of this road had been utilised by HQPlantations in the twelve months prior to sustaining major storm damage from Tropical Cyclone Debbie in 2017. Since that time, HQPlantations has operated alternate haul routes from Kalpowar via Gin Gin and Monto. Log transport from the HQPlantations Bulburin plantations via the Boyne Valley was not affected. Recently completed road repairs between Many Peaks and Kalpowar have enabled a return to this preferred and shortest Boyne Valley route from Kalpowar.
\n\n\n\n
HQPlantations Chief Operating Officer Mr Islay Robertson said that “HQPlantations greatly appreciates the efforts of DTMR in completing the repairs to the road in a timely manner and are pleased the Many Peaks section of the Gladstone to Monto Road has been reopened to heavy vehicles.”
\n\n\n\n
Mr Robertson also confirmed that “consistent with all HQPlantations haulage operations, a risk assessment of this route had been undertaken to ensure safe operation. In addition, all plantation log haulage operators are required to adhere to operating guidelines ensuring they meet HQPlantations and community road safety expectations. Importantly HQPlantations is able to monitor adherence to its requirements through truck intercepts and in-truck Management Systems that record truck speed and location.”

In addition to these measures, HQPlantations forest management systems are independently audited and certified under the internationally recognised Responsible Wood and Forest Stewardship Council systems.

In concluding, Mr Robertson stated that “HQPlantations is committed to sound environmental and safety management in all its operations.”

Harvesting to continue in the Ringtail Plantation area

\n\nHarvesting of softwood plantations within the Ringtail Plantation Area will recommence in late July 2018 as part of an initiative to transition the current commercial forest managed under Plantation licence by HQPlantations to conservation tenure. The project is a unique and collaborative initiative that brings together HQPlantations, Noosa Shire Council, Noosa Parks Association and the Queensland Government to achieve mutually beneficial conservation outcomes.
\n\n\n\n
HQPlantations will progressively harvest the pine plantations in accordance with its internationally recognised FSC and Responsible Wood sustainable forest management practices that ensure native vegetation, waterways and wildlife values are protected. Hardwood plantations will not be harvested and understory native vegetation will be protected where possible.
\n\n\n\n
Visitors are reminded that this forest will continue to be managed as a commercial plantation during the transition period. To ensure public safety, access to harvest sites will be restricted.
\n\n\n\n
HQPlantations are committed to minimising impacts on our neighbours, and therefore harvest and haulage operations are targeting working hours of between 6am and 6pm.

Plantation harvesting near Charlie Moreland Park

Murphys Road bridge limit

Responsible recreation in Queensland’s plantation forests

Plantation forests in Queensland managed by HQPlantations are becoming increasingly popular destinations for recreation. To ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time, visitors are reminded that in addition to being in a working forest, they are in a public place and must behave responsibly and obey the law, including the Forestry Act.
\n\n
\n\nHere are a few of the rules you are required to comply with to enjoy Queensland’s plantation forests responsibly.
\n\n\n\n
Road rules apply. By law, your vehicles must be fully registered and roadworthy, you must have a licence to drive or ride it and you must stay on formed roads, drive to the conditions and observe safety signage indicating work sites or road closures ahead. Because children don’t have licences, they cannot ride or drive in plantation forests.
\n\n\n\n
Please don’t drive in mud. This damages our roads. Plantation roads are not government managed or funded roads. We will continue to be forced to close areas that become too badly damaged for us to access for fire protection or are too costly to maintain for forest operations, which disadvantages all recreation users.
\n\n\n\n
Respect our neighbours. Please keep vehicle noise down near houses and be considerate about when you ride or drive, particularly very early in the morning or late at night. We are closing a small area south of the Glass House Woodford Road to try and reduce excessive noise in this rural residential valley. We would appreciate your compliance.
\n\n\n\n
Please don’t litter! If you brought it in, please take it out and dispose of it responsibly. No one likes a tosser.
\n\n\n\n
Groups require a permit. Five or more cars or motorbikes traveling together or 15 or more walkers, bike riders or horse riders require an organised event permit. If you don’t want to get a permit, which requires public liability insurance, travel in small groups of fewer than five vehicles (or 15 people). You’ll find more information at here
\n\n\n\n
Check the plantation is open. Our plantations are often closed to the public before, during or after extreme weather events such as cyclones, strong winds, heavy rain or very high fire danger. It is your responsibility to check the plantation you plan to visit is open by going to our closures page.

Beerburrum thinning operation – Compartment 214 Burrum

HQPlantations will be thinning compartment 214 Burrum, south west of the Beerburrum township adjacent to Cobb and Co Drive, from now until the end of April, weather permitting.
\n\n\n\n
Thinning is a routine forestry practice undertaken approximately half way through a crop rotation (the lifecycle), where approximately half of the trees are removed evenly throughout the compartment. It is carried out to improve the growing conditions and timber quality for the remaining trees through to maturity.
\n\n\n\n
This compartment was planted in May 1998, and is scheduled to be completely harvested in 2026. Once this occurs, the compartment will be cleared of harvest debris and replanted to repeat the growing cycle, typically within a year.
\n\n\n\n
We have taken the following steps to reduce the impact of the thinning operation on neighbours as much as possible:
\n\n
\n\nWhere weather and ground conditions allow, harvesting will commence furthest from town (approx. 2km away) and will work eastward. By taking the trees closest to homes last, we hope this will reduce noise.
\n\tHarvesting will only take place Monday to Friday and won’t commence before 7am or continue past 10pm, however there may be some limited vehicle movements before or after these times.
\n\tOnly three to five loads will be removed each day and loaded trucks will exit on tracks further away from neighbours.
\n\tTruck drivers have been asked to limit speed, noise and dust in proximity to residential areas.
\n\t\n\n
For safety, access to the eastern most track bordering Cobb and Co Drive may be restricted for a short period when we are harvesting in that immediate area.
\n\n\n\n
Following thinning operations, some track and road repairs may be required to reinstate drainage and restore access to facilitate ongoing plantation and fire management.
\n\n\n\n
Timber produced from this thinning operation supplies local sawmills. All harvesting and haulage will be undertaken by local contractors, providing local employment.
\n\n
