What is an LED?

LED is actually an abbreviation for light emitting diode; essentially, it is a semi-conductor type of electronic component that produces light. An LED is NOT anything like a traditional light bulb where electricity is used to heat a tungsten filament until it glows (similar to a toaster), these are inefficient and gradually evaporate until they burn out. LEDs are much smaller than traditional light bulbs and fit easily into electrical circuits. Recent technological advancements have led to LEDs being desirable for home, office and commercial lighting spaces.

Shock resistant: LED lights are a solid state designed component and due to this they are reasonably resistant to breakages caused by transit, being dropped or similar incidents.

Savings: LED lights run with up to 88% less energy consumption compared to most Halogen and incandescent globes and an impressive 60%+ less energy consumption than fluorescent globes and tubes which means you not only save money but you’re helping protect our environment.

Temperature: LED lighting produces far less heat than conventional lighting, in some cases where an array of lights are used you can even save on your cooling bills!
\n\n\n\n
Safety: Due to their lower operating temperature LED lights are safer to use in the home by reducing the threat of house fires caused by ambient heat. They are electrically safe and are cool to touch for children’s lamps.

Light Quality: The more focused lighting provided by LEDs is ample light for all conditions; whether replacing tubes, halogens, incandescent or CFLs you will instantly find the light a more stable, crisp, clear light with distinctive colouring to suit.

Instant ON: LED lights have the ability to be turned on and off and to full capacity quicker than any other form of lighting. There is no flickering like CFLs and no lengthy warm up times.

Dimming: LED lights can be dimmed provided that the electronic components allow this. Generally you will need to use a LED driver and suitable dimmer pot to allow this.

Life: LED lights in general have a life expectancy of 35,000 – 50,000 hours. This means that even operating for 6-8 hours a day you should see your lights exceed 15 years with our high quality LED lights.

Non-Toxic: LED lights do not contain heavy metals or gases when compared to fluorescent bulbs. They also give off no UV radiation, reducing the risk of damage to skin, upholstery and more.

Size: LED lights can be produced very small making them more versatile than incandescent or fluorescent lights.
\n\nSelecting the correct LED
\n\n\n\n
Energy saving lighting is about reducing the wattage used in a light fitting while maintaining the strength of the light output. For example, a standard halogen downlight uses 50 watts, but you can purchase LED alternatives ranging from 4.5 watts to 14 watts. Generally, the higher the wattage, the higher the light output.
\n\n\n\n
When comparing an LED globe to an existing bulb it is necessary to compare the lumen output to ensure the same output of light. The conversion table below gives approximate comparisons. Please keep in mind that each individual globe may vary slightly in lumen output.

\n\nAll 12volt LED globes require a driver or transformer.
\n\n
\n\nThis allows the globe to be adapted to accept the 24oV power available in all Australian buildings. When selecting or using a driver the wattage displayed on the product determines the maximum wattage that can be used.
\n\n
\n\nFor Example – a 30W driver can be used to run 5 X 6W 12V globes or 3 x 10w 12V Globes with each combination totalling 30W.
\n\n
\n\nIt is also very important when a driver is installed for use outdoors that it must have an IP67 rating.
\n\n
\n\nMR16 LED Compatibility with Halogen Transformers
\n\n
\n\nThe two most common halogen transformers used to power downlights in Australia are the Iron Core / Magnetic (big and heavy) type, and the Electronic (lightweight with plastic casing) type.

This can be easily overcome with a replacement LED-compatible transformer. Each transformer will indicate a minimum load which is generally between 10W – 60W. CGE retrofit globes have been tested on Clipsal and HPM branded transformers. Alternatively we advise testing a globe with a given transformer before proceeding with an order as there are over 100 brands of transformers.
