At Tonyrefail School we are committed to developing the Literacy skills of our pupils, both in Literacy lessons and across the curriculum. All teachers promote and develop Literacy through their subject areas and/or during registration. We have cross-curricular maps that provide opportunities for clear progression in oracy and reading/writing across Key Stage 3.
\n\n
\n\nPupils in years 7 - 9 have dedicated Literacy lessons on their timetables. These are in addition to their normal English lessons and develop the skills required for everyday life, as well as supporting their English lessons and preparing

\n\nThis year, we have subscribed to ‘First News’.

\n\nAccelerated Reader
\n\n\n\n
We further enhance our culture of reading by using the Accelerated Reader (AR) package, whose primary purpose is to accelerate learning for all pupils of all ability levels.
\n\n\n\n
At its heart, AR is simple. Pupils read a book, take an AR quiz, and get immediate feedback. They get excited and motivated when they see their progress. And we, as teachers and parents, can easily monitor and manage pupils’ independent reading practice.
\n\n\n\n
Reading is vital for success, both in school and in everyday life. At Tonyrefail School, we encourage pupils to progress and to develop a lifelong love of reading through our Accelerated Reader program. Accelerated Reader guides pupils to choose books of the correct difficulty from the school library before taking quizzes on the books to test their understanding. We provide books of all interest and difficulty levels to allow everyone the chance to find books that appeal to them and that they can understand and enjoy. To further promote reading, all pupils in Year 7, 8 and 9 have twice weekly, 20 minute D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) sessions to allow pupils the time and opportunity to read for pleasure. These are timetabled in the pupils’ planners. Pupil progress is also monitored through Accelerated Reader. This allows us to ensure that all pupils who are in need of extra reading support receive all the help that they need.

Skill Up
\n\n\n\n
Skill Up is a targeted support intervention, aimed at pupils with low reading ages. They work directly with pupils on an individual or small group basis to develop their literacy skills. Skill Up focuses on reading, spelling, writing and oracy; at whatever level the pupil needs.
\n\n\n\n
Initial entry criteria is a reading age one year or more below their chronological age determined using a Neales’ Test. Pupils are monitored closely and tested when appropriate.
\n\n\n\n
Pupils can also work on a BKSB interactive package that initially identifies the pupil’s general working level by an initial assessment. On completion of this, the pupil then completes a diagnostic assessment which immediately identifies their strengths and skill gaps.
