This past Saturday our Cronulla Sharks U14A Boys hosted a scrimmage tournament down at Gunnamatta Bay. Teams from Melbourne Collegians, Brisbane Barracudas & Sydney University all stepped into our shark tank, participating in a round robin of fast paced and action packed Water Polo. Gunnamatta Bay produced a spectacular day for everyone involved and anyone that was there knows the photos don’t do it justice.

The games were played with great competitive spirit, allowing each team to test themselves against each other as they prepare for the National Championships being held in Brisbane in January where they will all meet again. With quality Water Polo on display, all the spectators were well entertained, catching the attention of many non-water polo bay-goers who stopped to enjoy the games.

Outside of the water, many new friendships were formed and old friendships were strengthened as each of the players got to know their opposition.

Tournament founder and organiser, Jimmy Winchester was elated when talking about the day. “The Melbourne Collegians, Brisbane Barracudas and Cronulla Sharks clubs should be proud of the outstanding young men that represented their clubs. The sportsmanship demonstrated and willingness to make new friends made the day very special”.

Jimmy summing up the friendly match candidly, “us dad’s who offer great advice out of the water but when in the water we found the advice we give is not that easy to execute. Living off past sporting glories of the 80s and 90s just doesn’t cut it in the pool when a young and fit 14 year old is sprinting past you with the ball. It was great fun for the players and the spectators, and I know us Dads hope any camera and video footage of the match has been deleted”.

After packing up the bay, the amazing day in the sun was finished off with a big BBQ spread put on by our Cronulla organisers and our extremely helpful parents. All players, parents and team officials came together to retell some of best stories of the day and ideas of how to continue putting on events like this one were brainstormed and shared, with the promise to stay in touch being made.

Adam French from Brisbane Barracudas shared a similar opinion to Jimmy when reflecting on the day, “the positive feedback was constant from our team all day but the one quote that sticks in my head was towards the end of the day when one of our boys looked me square in the eye and said ‘can we do this every week?’ – that says it all”.
\n\n\n\n
Jude from Melbourne Collegians also had nothing but positive feedback about the tournament, “it was an amazing experience that the boys will never forget. I’m sure we just initiated some lifelong friendships between the boys”.

This day highlighted what team sports have to offer; competition, respect, new friendships, skills development and team bonding. Not to forget the coming together of both young and old to enjoy each other’s company and strengthen our community.

The day was a huge success due to the numerous parent volunteers – many going under the radar with their efforts before, during and after the day. A big thank you to Jimmy Winchester for putting the event together and being such a great host. On behalf on the club we would also like to thank parents Sarah, Katrina and Donna for all their help. Thank you also to Jack Winchester & Rebel McFadden for refereeing the games throughout the day!
