Redgum Book Club announces the shortlist for the fourth annual Young Writers’ Award

A record number of students aged between nine and thirteen have entered the fourth annual Young Writers’ Award.  The opportunity to have their picture book or story book published nationally by Australian owned Redgum Book Club was certainly a driving force for our upcoming authors. Stories of mysticism, magical spirits and the love of family providing the foundation for many of the shortlisted titles.

YWA judge Allison Paterson was overwhelmed by the diversity of stories and the depth of talent displayed: ‘Every year I am constantly amazed by the breadth of topics and genres the entries cover.  Without a doubt we are now seeing children, young authors, delving into the themes of diversity, acceptance and environmental concerns – within both Picture Book and Short Story categories.

'The YWA Short Story category was compelling, with many young writers using the sci-fi or fairy tale genres to create stories of the broken and downtrodden triumphing over challenging situations or perceived evil. It’s always enlightening and sometimes just a little disconcerting to see how our young writers are viewing and managing contemporary issues. Their writing really does provide an outlet to ‘discuss’ these issues and concerns.' she said.

Redgum Book Club Young Writers’ Award provides a very real platform to develop the next generation of Australian writers.  Each year the Young Writers’ Award grows in the number of entries and schools participating –including private, state, distance education and home-school entries.  There are also more educators incorporating the award into their school’s writing programs. This is a sure sign that the Young Writers’ Award is indeed helping children to find their unique voice through storytelling.

In 2019, seven young authors have been shortlisted in both the Children’s Picture Book and the Children’s Short Story category – with the winners in each category to be announced on the 6th March 2019.
