Where the video cameras are the eyes of the video security system, the Network Video Recorder (NVR) is the heart. The NVR is the location to which all of the cameras connect. It is responsible for capturing and storing the video, connecting to the user interface, including the Internet connectivity, and managing the streaming and playback of stored and live video.

The NVR unit supports cameras based on the number of channels built in to the unit. Typically, NVRs support between 4 and 32 channels or cameras. Multiples are generally 4, 8, 16 and 32. Some high end NVR units can support up to 64 cameras.

All Vision NVR units fully support the ONVIF standard for IP cameras. This means that camera types, even brands, can be mixed and matched to suit your specific requirements.

Vision NVR units also have an option for direct Power over Ethernet support for cameras via a built in switch feature. Most units have either 4 or 8 PoE switch ports. Support for more cameras can be facilitated by the addition of a PoE data switch, but only up to the maximum number of channels available on the NVR.

Vision NVR units will internally support at least two hard drives, each up to 4TB capacity and can record at resolutions up 5MP. Further storage can often be added with the use of Network Attached Storage (NAS) or a USB connected external drive.

The time for which captured video can be stored depends upon the number of cameras connected, the resolution of the camera stream and the volume of storage available.
