So, we're writing a case study about ourselves. Makes sense. This is where it all began..

Like many of our clients, we're a small business and we do what we think is necessary to protect ourselves and our property. We have insurance, we try to ensure that we are in a secure area and building and we take steps to minimise our exposure. Nonetheless, a few years ago we experienced a break in. Although not a lot was taken, we did our bit and called the police. They were very responsive and helpful; they took statements, reviewed the situation and took fingerprints. They also asked if we had any video surveillance which might have caught images of the bad guys. We did not. The criminals were not caught.

Determined to ensure that we would not be exposed again, we moved premises, beefed up physical security and started to investigate video surveillance options. We were looking for something that we could tie in to our data network to take advantage of existing systems. Our brief was simple. The system had to provide high quality video and images, it had to be compact, it had to be resilient to intruder attempts to circumvent it, it had to be able to \"see in the dark\", and it had to be remotely accessible using Internet connected devices. We would like the system to be able to notify us when suspicious activity took place outside business hours without the cost and hassle of a traditional back to base alarm system. This could be accomplished via SMS, email or other notification options.

For some time we scoured the local and overseas markets looking for a solution. We knew we did not want a traditional analogue system as it was too dissimilar from the computer systems we already had in place. We didn't need a whole new infrastructure solution that required new components and required separate maintenance. We decided to look at newer technology IP based network solutions only. This would make it simple to integrate with our computer systems and our networking.

There were a variety of camera and recorder options available. They all looked good on paper and the specifications sounded like exactly what we wanted. We started investing in cameras, recorders and software for trial purposes. It soon became obvious that a camera is not the all purpose resource we anticipated. A lot of equipment was cast aside as we realised its shortcomings. As we tested, our specification was refined. We tested wireless solutions, cabled solutions, different camera resolutions and different recording devices. We researched and trialled and eventually we developed a solution that worked. It was fully integrated and met our requirements for robustness, reliability, remote access and archival.

Anyone entering our business immediately realises that we have video security, that they are being recorded for identification purposes and this may well deter those seeking to scope our office out for a future robbery attempt. We're also protected against false claims of injury or misreporting of events which occur. As a side benefit, we may be indirectly helping our neighbours by tracking the movement of casual visitors to our complex who may be involved in crime related activities. We can check the status of our office outside hours and it's surprisingly useful for those times when we get half way home and suddenly wonder if the last person out turned the lights off.

Having deployed the system, we showed it to a few of our clients and contacts. The response was an overwhelming and near universal \"we have to have that too\". So, we thought \"why not?\" Let's add this system to our product line and let's help our current and future clients enjoy the added measure of security and peace of mind that only a video solution can add. So here we are.
