She is winner of The Australian/Vogel’s Award (2005) and was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers Prize (Best First Book) award (2006) and the WA Premier’s Award for Fiction (2006). She has been awarded grants from the Australia Council for the Arts, the WA Department of Culture & the Arts, and Creative Victoria, and has held residency fellowships at the University of Iowa, Varuna: The National Writers House, Peking University and Redgate Gallery (Beijing), among others.

Julienne has taught writing at Curtin University, where she directed the Creative Writing program for many years, and at the University of Melbourne, the University of Queensland, Griffith University, and the University of Western Sydney.

She lives in Melbourne, where she was appointed as a Vice Chancellor's Senior Research Fellow with non/fictionLab at RMIT University in 2015.
