It has been thirty years ago since Ursula Franklin (first woman University Professor at the University of Toronto) delivered the 1989 CBC Massey Lectures, The Real World of Technology and twenty years since its expanded version was published. Describing technology as practice and as a system, Franklin encouraged us to examine the social class of experts, the changing nature of community and issues of power and control. She argued for attentiveness about how digital technologies affect relations of time and space, individual and collective responsibilities, and provided a bridge between the humanist traditions of early 20th century Europe and the technological explosion that began after WWII and the defeat of Fascism that continues to echo today.

This working group will examine the intellectual legacy of Franklin and her pioneering feminist/person-centred perspectives on technology and how the themes and concerns she addressed throughout her career map on to contemporary scholarly endeavours at the University of Toronto surrounding technology and society. We will apply a ‘Franklin-esque’ reading to issues and ethics redolent in contemporary ‘innovative’ and ‘disruptive’ technologies of datafication, algorithms and AI. What is their impact on data discrimination, privacy, social justice, resilient communities, and equity, inclusion, and diversity?

\n\nThe Sonic Spaces working group brings together scholars, architects, and artists to discuss the often-neglected but important relations between sound and the built environment. We are at a significant moment, one in which sound has been instrumentalized—and in some cases weaponized—through active techniques and technologies in order to effect particular forms of social control. Riot police, for example, have begun to use Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRAD) to break up protests with ear-splitting blasts of noise. The Mosquito, a device that capitalizes on humans’ gradual loss of hearing in high frequency ranges, is currently being deployed to create sonic spaces that deter young people throughout Europe, North America, and Japan. Less sensationalized, yet no less important, are the passive effects that the built environment have on social and political life. We might consider, for example, how noise abatement laws function to permit or repress political assembly and speech; how rezoning facilitates residential real estate development at the expense of cultural production and nightlife; or how “quality of life” policing strategies serve to racialize community-based sonic practices and enable gentrification and even segregation. We will consider the social and political consequences of these sonic interventions in order to develop new approaches for understanding and creating spatial practices that take sonic and other sensory experience into account.

\n\nThe Consent and Its Discontents Working Group expands visions of consent praxis beyond the narrow practices that structure our daily digital lives at the university, such as Terms of Service, university ethics protocols, and developer-led community consultations. Our Working Group looks to theories of consent as developed by Indigenous feminist, queer, mad, and diasporic communities as well as to grassroots organizations, Indigenous youth organizations, and sex workers who manifest, craft, and advocate for thicker and more relational understandings and practices of consent. Our Working Group asks: What practices of permission and processual consent have communities already built that can be brought to bear on digital practices? How can we learn across different protocols and efforts to create communities of meaningful and ongoing consent? As scholars, artists, and activists meeting in Tkaranto, Indigenous feminist consent practices that connect body and land together (Native Youth Sexual Health Network) are crucial for identifying the limits and constraints of current conventional practices and imaginaries concerning data ethic. Through reciprocal relationships, cotheorization, and public-facing conversations structured to call in the community members in attendance to contribute, the Content and Its Discontents Working Group will produce a toolkit of alternative praxes and methodologies of consent in order to contribute to digital justice research and relationships in Tkaranto.

Currently, the attention of the public in media, government, humanitarian aid and corporate philanthropy is largely centered on using technology to support learning and community engagement in the Global South. As researchers, educators, activists, and technologists work to understand the challenges and possibilities of using technology and digital media to support the worlds most marginalized communities over there, the role of digital tools and practices for migratory and minoritizied communities here is sometimes overlooked. In this working group, we intentionally frame the division of “us” in the West and “them” in the developing world. This framing calls attention to the subtle and harmful forces of power and representation related to participation in digital media among young people in Canada who have experienced migration. Our goals are to connect with and convene scholars, activists and educators working in Southern Ontario and across Canada in this area and to set an agenda for key research areas related to race, media, and global migration among Canada’s youth.

\n\nExtended from 2017, You’re Deactivated focuses on the message of the Platform and how workers resist the casualized and precarious work conditions of the digital economy by repurposing, hacking, or refusing platform labour. While technology intensifies work, it is constantly met with resistance from workers. Yet, while the platform may be today’s assembly line, only recently research in media studies has started to focus on workers in the digital economy as active subjects that challenge the patterns shaped by the platform as they unionize, or organize to fight for improved conditions, higher wages, predictable scheduling, and better benefits.
\n\nWe are organizing the second edition of the Log Out! Conference to unveil new forms of resistance generated by the platform.

Digital Islamophobia

In the decade following the events of 9/11, Western mainstream media has become obsessed with Islam, often sensationalizing Muslims as inherently violent, barbaric, and rife with terrorists. In the current technological era, the number of users who have taken to digital media, such as Social Networking Sites (SNS), to express their anger, hatred, and make death threats towards Muslims has been increasing dramatically. The anonymity of social media provides perpetrators of online harassment and violence an ideal platform to target vulnerable religious minorities. In light of the current sociopolitical climate where fear and suspicion towards Muslims continues to persist in online spaces, this symposium aims to bring together media activists and scholars from various disciplines to debate and develop current understandings of the (digital) media’s role in the construction and perpetuation of Islamophobia. This symposium will highlight the different ways in which Islamophobia is challenged both online and offline. Furthermore, scholars will gather to critically examine representations of Muslims in mainstream media and social media sites in order to illuminate dominant social discourses of Muslims as the “Other”. In particular, this symposium seeks to draw attention to the means by which hegemonic discourses of Muslims perpetuated in mainstream media have diffused into social networking sites, and how these discourses function to reinforce common stereotypes about Muslims as violent, uncivilized, and a threat to Western values. Through intellectual discussion and participatory dialogue, this symposium will answer key questions regarding the relationship between (digital) media and Islamophobia, including: How are Muslims described and viewed in (digital) media? How have Islamophobic discourses, demonstrated in mainstream media, seeped into digital media? How does digital media and in particular social media sites, reconfigure Islamophobia? What types of threats are being used against Muslims via social media sites?

\n\nThis working group and research project seeks to explore, document and broadcast six different conditions where media and infrastructure intersect with urban and post- urban space in Toronto. It investigates the layered and latent existence of public space in the city –as medium, practice, network, artifact and material space– and with this the possibility of reclaiming it. 6 Place Toronto brings together a multidisciplinary team of scholars working in related fields in order to develop a dialogue between media studies, infrastructure studies and urban studies, to confirm a series of field research locations and operations, and to follow an interdisciplinary methodology for mediation and urbanism. It focuses on 6 ‘loaded,’ significant spaces in Toronto –between the infrastructural and the civic, landscape and object, pathway and node, common and public– all in a way either existing or potential public spaces.

We carry out sustained conversations with each other and experts in our fields, grounded in theory and experience from the global south. GRAYSON LEE is a first year PhD student at the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto who holds a Fellowship at the Centre for 2018/19. His research focuses on South Korea’s digital culture industry and transnational formations of culture. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, that draws from the social sciences and the humanities to connect political economy with digital imaginaries through media. Grayson completed his MA in the East Asian Studies department at the University of Toronto, where he wrote his thesis: Reading Korean Popular Culture: The Webtoon as Form, Translation, and Critique of Everyday Life. He is excited to have the opportunity to engage with the McLuhan Centre for Culture and Technology and plans to integrate emerging conversations and scholarship on communications and media, within his own work.

\n\nRIANKA SINGH is a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information and a Research Assistant at the Centre working on projects related to McLuhan and media studies. This includes working with the Director on a MsUnderstanding Media edited volume, and providing assistance and editorial input on a special issue publication on contemporary McLuhan and media studies. Rianka works at the intersection of feminist media studies, feminist geography and platform studies. Using these three lenses and raising questions about the platform and its role in structuring intersectional feminist struggle, Rianka’s work highlights the important ways in which those who are also POC, queer, trans and, or disabled, develop differential spatial strategies in moments of resistance.

\n\nRÉKA GÁL is a first year PhD student at the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto who holds a Fellowship at the Centre for 2019/20. She has completed her master’s in Cultural Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Her work unites feminist media theory and postcolonial studies with the history of science and environmental studies and explores how technological tools and scientific methods are employed to purportedly solve socio-political problems. In her master’s thesis Cosmic Colonial Fantasies, she explored the historical stages through which outer space colonial fantasies evolved, from ancient Greece until the 18th century. She plans on extending this research during her PhD, to reflect from a feminist perspective on why and how the rhetoric of outer space colonization emerges in the present. She is excited for the opportunity to engage with the Centre and to participate in interdisciplinary conversations about technology and culture.

\n\nNASMA AHMED is a technologist based in the city we now know as Toronto and a Community Researcher at the Centre. Nasma is currently the Director of the Digital Justice Lab, our mission is to build towards a more just and equitable digital future. She has experience working alongside the public service and the non-profit sector, focusing on technology capacity building. In 2017, she was an Open Web Fellow with Mozilla and Ford Foundation, focusing on organization digital security. She is passionate about community engagement, knowledge translation and speculating the possibilities of the future and will be collaborating on a series of events/publications with our director (Sarah Sharma) and other researchers at the Centre.
