\n\nIsn’t the Mining Boom Dead?
\n\nLet’s not forget there are a lot of different commodities in mining but to a large extent, the commodity prices have recovered nicely and this has in turn seen resource stocks follow. Although this does not reflect a new boom, the resources industry has largely stabilised and as a result we have seen a good flow of opportunities in mining over the last 12 to 18 months.
\n\n
\n\nWhat is the difference between FIFO, DIDO or Residential roles?
\n\nFIFO refers to Fly-In, Fly Out and generally refers to flying to a mine site without having to relocate yourself or your family permanently. DIDO refers to Drive in, drive out. Residential roles typically require you to relocate yourself and your family to a location that is invariably fairly close to a site.
\n\n
\n\nMany organisations offer different rosters. For example, an 8:6 roster will require you to work for 8 days in a row but you get to spend 6 days at home. Another popular roster is the 5:2 5:3. This involves working a nine-day fortnight of Monday to Friday and then Monday to Thursday but you get to spend every weekend at home, almost replicating a normal weekday job.

\n\nWhat are the benefits of working remotely in mining?
\n\nMany people enjoy working in regional areas away from the hustle and bustle of capital cities. There is less traffic, and an easier pace of life.
\n\tOften working with people on site leads to some very close knit personal friendships and relationships
\n\tWorking directly on a site allows you to develop a strong understanding of the operations side of the business. This will position you extremely well for corporate roles in a head office at a later stage in your career.
\n\tWorking in regional locations often compensates with better salaries. I have seen people receive substantial salary increases.
\n\tMany sites will provide food, clothing and rent support, which can also reduce your weekly living expenses.
\n\t
\n\nWhat are the disadvantages of working remotely in mining?
\n\nWorking in regional locations may mean big drives to get anywhere and you will certainly not have the infrastructure around you that you can expect in capital cities.
\n\tWorking FIFO or DIDO may require you to be away from family for extended periods of time. This won’t suite every family.
\n\tFIFO and DIDO will require significant time commuting to and from work. Depending on your personal circumstances, this may be tiring with a lot of time spent in transit.
